Ottawa Women’s Cycling Club chooses simplicity, connection, and clarity with Cyql

The Ottawa Women’s Cycling Club (OWCC) is a dynamic and engaged cycling club in Canada, founded by and for women. What began as a local initiative has grown into a thriving association with over one hundred members. The club is entirely run by volunteers and focuses on creating a positive and supportive environment where women can ride, learn, and grow together—regardless of age, experience, or fitness level.

“There are no limits to what the women in our club can achieve,” says Caitlin Crooks, who has now taken on the role of Cyql expert within OWCC. “Whether you’re just starting out or have years of cycling experience, for us it’s all about fun, connection, and confidence on the bike.”

Digitizing without the hassle

At the start of this season, the board decided it was time to improve ride management and internal communication. With a growing number of members and more and more activities, it became clear that spreadsheets, scattered messages, and emails were no longer sufficient. Board member Melanie set out to find a solution that would be both user-friendly and efficient. That search quickly led to Cyql.

“It was the clear winner,” says Caitlin. “Cyql offered exactly what we needed: one central place for everything related to our club and rides.”

Key strength: clarity and ease of use

Currently, 110 members actively use the app. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, especially regarding the platform’s simplicity and clarity.

“As soon as you open Cyql, you know what’s going on. Creating rides, signing up, communicating — it all just works intuitively. That makes things a lot easier for both the board and the members.”

Ideas for future features

While overall satisfaction is high, OWCC is also providing constructive input on potential improvements. One suggestion is to enable personal communication between members within the app: “Right now, you can only communicate with people who have signed up for a ride. It would be great if you could also send messages individually or in groups.”

Another wish is for a timeline featuring recent rides, comments, and photos — a kind of social overview of everything happening within the club. “It would show non-participants what they’re missing and hopefully encourage them to join the next ride.”

More time for what matters

The switch to Cyql has brought a lot of benefits to OWCC. Not only is organizing rides much easier, but it also strengthens the sense of community within the club. “It takes away a lot of administrative hassle, which means the board has more time and energy to focus on what really matters: bringing people together on their bikes.”

Cycling Team Toeristiek chooses fun, structure and clarity with Cyql

Cycling Team Toeristiek vzw is not your typical cycling club. This cycling community was born during the COVID-19 era, when only small group rides were allowed. What started as a WhatsApp group to organize rides quickly evolved into a close-knit group of passionate cyclists looking for something extra alongside their regular club activities.

An addition to existing clubs

“We’re not a traditional club with official members,” says Bert Pattyn. “Many of our cyclists are already affiliated with other clubs. Cycling Team Toeristiek is a complement to their cycling fun. We go for sporty rides with room for coffee stops, photos, and above all: some ‘toeristiek’ along the way.”

#CTT focuses on enjoyment and experience, both on the road and on gravel. With nearly 200 members, the community has grown rapidly in a short time. “We try to schedule our rides when nearby clubs don’t have official rides, so we really add value. Thanks to good planning, we’re able to organize group rides where everyone feels welcome.”

Discovering Cyql

The club discovered Cyql online, but the real connection was made during a visit to Velofollies 2024 in Kortrijk. “That’s when we saw the platform in action. Since then, we’ve been using it to plan our rides.”

What stood out to them immediately? “The clarity. The app offers a clear overview of upcoming rides, with all details and GPX files. This makes it easy for everyone to know where, when and how to join—without it getting buried in a chaotic WhatsApp group.”

Suggestions and wishes

Still, they remain constructively critical and enjoy contributing to further development. “The bottom menu bar in the app could use a stronger visual presence—maybe by using our club colors. And we’d love to have direct access to the GPX library there instead of the current ‘marketplace’ tab. That would make it even more user-friendly.”

Why other clubs should choose Cyql

“Cyql makes it easy to publish rides with all details, without them getting lost in a busy WhatsApp group,” says Bert. “It’s software for cycling clubs that want to take group ride organization seriously.”

Hickory Velo Club from North Carolina digitizes club communication with Cyql

Hickory Velo Club from North Carolina doesn’t view digitalisation as a goal in itself, but rather as a way to improve club life. With Cyql, they found a solution that not only simplifies the organisation of group rides, but also integrates essential features such as the liability waiver.

Cycling, technology, and engagement

Russ is not only an active cyclist in Hickory Velo Club, but also manages the club’s website. “I build and maintain websites as a hobby and enjoy using technology to improve processes,” he explains. Together with fellow club member Dave, he helps organise this 120-member club, founded in 2004 in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The focus is on road cycling, although there are also members who enjoy cyclocross and mountain biking.

Switching to Cyql

The search for a modern solution came from dissatisfaction with their previous app. “There was hardly any development, and it felt like a dead end,” says Russ. While searching on Google, he came across Cyql. “The description immediately appealed to us. After starting the trial period, we knew: this is exactly what we need.”

More than just planning rides

What immediately stood out was the completeness of the app. Russ: “We can create rides, appoint ride leaders, manage routes, post news updates, and members can respond. But the best part is that the liability waiver is integrated in the app. That’s crucial for a club in the United States. Everyone must sign the waiver, and thanks to Cyql, we can now manage that easily and centrally. That makes it possible for us to use Cyql seriously as the club’s central platform.”

Dave adds: “Cyql is an elegant and well-thought-out solution. Everything we need is there—without the hassle.”

Quick adoption within the club

The introduction of Cyql within Hickory Velo Club went remarkably smoothly. “Within two weeks, more than half of our members had already installed and started using the app,” says Russ. “We expect that soon nearly all of our communication will go through Cyql. That means we can finally leave time-consuming email newsletters behind.”

What could be improved?

Although satisfaction is high, Russ and Dave still see opportunities for further development. “We’re still using a separate tool for contribution management and memberships. If Cyql could integrate that too—including payments and automatic renewals—then we’d really have everything in one system.”

Why other clubs should use Cyql too

Russ is clear: “Cyql offers a well-designed and complete solution for organising group rides, activities, and communication within your club. Everything is centralised, well-structured, and mobile-accessible.” Dave agrees: “If you’re looking for a platform that truly understands what cycling clubs need, with a team that listens and constantly improves, then look no further. Cyql is the answer.”

WTC De Zennetrappers Embraces Digitalization with Cyql

WTC De Zennetrappers, a cycling club from Zemst-Eppegem with 40 enthusiastic members, was looking for a more modern way to plan rides and communicate. During a cycling trip in Mallorca, they discovered Cyql – and were instantly sold. Since then, everything has been smoother, more organized, and free from the hassle of emails or scattered route files.

A Club Full of Passion for Cycling

Cycling club“De Zennetrappers” from Zemst-Eppegem consists of 40 enthusiastic members who enjoy varied cycling trips every week. Previously, rides were planned manually and shared via email, with route files uploaded to GPS devices. The process was time-consuming and sometimes led to confusion and mistakes. The club wanted to modernize and came across Cyql during a Rompelberg holiday in Mallorca. After a brief introduction, the members were convinced: this was the solution they had been looking for.

Why Cyql?

After searching for a more efficient way to plan and organize rides, the Zennetrappers discovered the benefits of Cyql. The app combines user-friendliness with a clear structure, making ride planning and sharing much simpler. Since switching, the club no longer needs to send emails, and members no longer have to dig through old messages.

“Cyql has helped us tremendously. Uploading routes and planning rides is now much faster and error-free,” says Michael van Malderen, member of De Zennetrappers. “Everyone in the club loves how clear and intuitive the app is.”

What Makes Cyql Unique for De Zennetrappers?

Cyql offers numerous benefits for WTC De Zennetrappers:

“The app really feels like a modern solution for managing a cycling club. Both young and old in our club have embraced digitalization,” adds Michael.

Room for Improvement

Although the experience with Cyql has been very positive, the club still sees opportunities for enhancement. “It would be nice if news and events were more prominently displayed, for example, integrated between the rides in the overview,” suggests Michael.

Recommendation for Other Clubs

For cycling clubs that want to work more efficiently and offer a modern experience to their members, Cyql is the solution. “Cyql is the digital solution for any modern cycling club. It’s a breath of fresh air to work with – for both the club and its members,” Michael concludes enthusiastically.

New in Cyql: the waiver feature – clarity upfront, safety first

Clubs that regularly organize rides know how important it is to make clear agreements in advance. For example, about safety, behavior during the ride, or liability. That’s why we’re introducing a new feature in Cyql to support this: the waiver.

What is a waiver?

A waiver is a short statement in which a participant confirms that they are joining a ride at their own risk and agree to certain conditions. Think of it as a liability disclaimer or a set of behavioral rules for group rides.

How it works in Cyql

  • club setting: as a club admin, you can define a default waiver text in the club settings. This could be a general statement you want to apply to all rides.
  • set per ride: when creating or editing a ride, you can choose whether the waiver should be active.
  • explicit agreement: once a waiver is enabled, participants will see the waiver text when signing up. They can only register for the ride after checking the “agree” box.

Important: update required

To use this feature, app version 3.3.1 is required. This update will soon be available in the App Store and Google Play. Participants without this update will not be able to sign up for rides with an active waiver.

Available now

The waiver feature is now available for all clubs on Cyql. As soon as the new app version is live, you’ll be able to activate the feature. Got questions or feedback? We’d love to hear from you! Together, we’re building a safe, clear, and user-friendly platform for every cycling club.

Grupetto Meppel strengthens club spirit and engagement with Cyql

Fietstoerclub Grupetto Meppel is a close-knit and passionate cycling club with 300 members, where both recreational and performance-oriented riders come together. The club organizes weekly rides, tours, and social events and was looking for a more efficient way to engage members and organize rides. Since the introduction of Cyql within the club, planning and communication have significantly improved.

From WhatsApp to Cyql: more structure and engagement

Previously, Grupetto Meppel used a WhatsApp group to plan rides, but this quickly became chaotic. “Cyql approached us at the right moment,” says Monique Visscher of Grupetto Meppel. “We were looking for an easy way to plan rides and actively involve our members. We heard positive experiences about Cyql and decided to try it ourselves.”

The switch to Cyql turned out to be a great success. Currently, 200 members of Grupetto Meppel actively use the app. “Everyone checks and plans rides via the app. It’s super handy for sharing new routes and ensures that everyone knows exactly when and where we depart,” Monique explains.

Ease of use and future wishes

What Grupetto Meppel especially appreciates about Cyql is its user-friendliness and clear planning. The app has not only made organizing rides easier but has also increased engagement within the club.

However, Monique still sees room for further expansion of functionalities: “A live tracking option would be a fantastic addition, allowing us to see in real-time where everyone is riding. It would also be useful if news messages could be scheduled and sent as push notifications at the best time.”

A recommendation for other clubs

Monique would definitely recommend Cyql to other cycling clubs and organizations: “Cyql makes planning rides simple and structured, encouraging more members to participate actively. It strengthens the club spirit and ensures that no one misses out on a great ride!”

With the use of Cyql, Grupetto Meppel continues to build a strong and active club culture. The app helps the club organize rides more efficiently and ensures that members ride together more often.

Getting Started with Cyql [5 of 6]: The Cyql App for iOS and Android

Getting started with Cyql - Part 5 of 6

The Cyql App for iOS and Android

In the previous parts of this series, we discussed how to integrate Cyql with other platforms to optimize the club experience. In this fifth part, we focus on the Cyql app for iOS and Android. We’ll show you how to make the most of the mobile version of Cyql for managing your club and, most importantly, how the app and web version improve communication with your club members.

Why Use the Cyql App?

The Cyql app is designed to enhance communication and organization within your club. As a club administrator, you now have a powerful tool at your disposal to simplify ride planning, club activity management, and member engagement. Thanks to the app, club members can access all the information they need anytime, anywhere, directly from their smartphone.

Key Features of the Cyql App

1. Keep Club Members Informed – A Clubhouse in Their Pocket

With the Cyql app, your club members will always be up to date with everything happening within the club, no matter where they are. As a club administrator, you can quickly and easily share important announcements, new rides, or upcoming events, ensuring that your members are always well-informed. The app allows members to find rides, interact with fellow club members, and easily sign up for rides. This makes it easier for them to stay engaged and participate in activities, strengthening the overall club dynamic. In short, the Cyql app is a clubhouse in their pocket, always ready to connect.

2. Clear Ride Overview

The Cyql app provides a structured and user-friendly ride overview, making it easy for members to find the perfect ride. As a club administrator, you can add rides and categorize them by distance, speed, and type, allowing members to quickly find rides that match their preferences. This saves time and ensures that members can easily sign up for rides that suit their level and interests. The clear ride overview provides transparency and makes it easier for members to plan their rides effectively, contributing to a well-organized and enjoyable experience for everyone.

3. Detailed Ride Information

With detailed ride information, members can prepare thoroughly for their cycling trips. The app provides club members with all the essential details, such as distance, start time, average speed, and starting location. As a club administrator, you can enrich rides with clear route information, maps indicating distance, elevation gain, and estimated duration, so members know exactly what to expect. This makes it easier for them to choose a ride that matches their fitness level and preferences. By offering detailed ride information, you, as a club administrator, contribute to a well-organized and enjoyable cycling experience for all your members.

4. Club Information

The Cyql app ensures that your members always have access to the latest developments within the club. As a club administrator, you can easily share news updates, activity announcements, and upcoming events. Members can quickly access key club information, such as the club profile, its mission, and the event calendar. Additionally, they can participate in the club marketplace, where they can buy or sell items. This makes the app more than just a ride-planning tool—it also serves as a way to increase member engagement and keep them informed about everything happening within the club.

5. Discover New Rides and Events

With the ‘Discover’ feature, members can broaden their cycling horizons by exploring new rides and events. As a club administrator, you can encourage members to participate in rides beyond their usual routes, such as local cycling tours, events hosted by other clubs, or even global challenges like Gran Fondos. The ‘Discover’ feature offers access to a wide range of rides, from social rides to the most prestigious cycling events. This helps your members embark on new adventures, expand their cycling experiences, and grow their network of fellow riders.

How to Make the Most of the Cyql App?

  • Personalize the member experience: Club members can filter rides to find options that match their preferences and skill levels.

  • Stay connected with your members: Use the news and activity features to keep in touch with your members and share important club updates.

  • Encourage members to explore: Motivate your members to use the ‘Discover’ feature to find new routes and events, expanding their cycling network.

Coming Up Next...
